The first training, “IT Infrastructure Support for Online Courses”, took place at Tangaza University College (Nairobi) from May 23 to 27, 2025. This training activity was implemented under Work Package 4 – Task 4.1: Training in e-learning platforms and materials. The main objectives of the workshop were to:
Strengthen the technical capacities of IT staff and academic personnel in the design, deployment, and maintenance of wireless communication networks for e-learning environments.
Provide participants with the necessary skills to install, configure, and manage Moodle-based Learning Management Systems (LMS).
Introduce open-source videoconferencing and collaboration tools for online education, ensuring interoperability, scalability, and secure access.
Promote knowledge exchange among partner universities to foster sustainable digital infrastructures in East African higher education institutions.
The training sessions were conducted by Dr. Carlos Turró and Héctor Castillo from the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) and were structured into three main modules:
Wireless communication and network infrastructure – covering Wi-Fi design and deployment, access point configuration, and connectivity management. Practical exercises with Alcatel Access Points enabled participants to address real-world campus network scenarios.
Installation and configuration of the Moodle platform – focusing on Docker-based scalability, plugin integration, system security, data backup, and offline access strategies.
Open-source tools for online learning – introducing platforms such as BigBlueButton and OpenVidu, and their integration through SSO and Scalelite to enable secure and efficient virtual classrooms.
